For many people, personal growth and self-development are important. Perhaps you have a career goal in mind that includes working on yourself in several different ways, or perhaps you just want to live your life becoming a better person than you were yesterday – note that this doesn’t mean better than other people. Personal growth and development is something that happens when you look at yourself internally and change the way that you act externally. This could be anything from how you treat other people to how you approach the big goals in your life, such as getting your dream career, purchasing a house, or anything else that you hope to do.
To get the most from your personal development, it’s important to be honest with yourself and approach it with an open mind. Here are eight things that you could do starting today to become a better person tomorrow.
Invest in Your Education
Some of the humblest people in this world are those who view their life as a learning experience. There’s never going to be a shortage of new things to learn, whether it’s something that you’ve chosen to do for your career and work life or are simply learning something new because it interests you. Consider your plans for your life and determine what you can learn to help you reach those goals faster. For example, if you are pursuing a career as a designer, a CAD training course could be beneficial to you and there are several CAD training courses available to choose from – many of which you can do online, allowing you to fit it easily around all the other commitments in your life.
Have a Plan
Start now when it comes to having a personal development plan. Your plan can be as long or as short as you would like it to be, but the most important thing is that it’s something you can stick to. For example, you could simply plan each week in advance, noting down one thing that you are going to do each day to help your personal development and goals. Do some soul-searching and be aware of the end goals that you wish to achieve. For example, if you’re planning to develop in your career, what can you do both inside and outside of the workplace to make this happen? Or if you want to develop as a person in the way that you handle your own self-care and mental health, which facilities are available to you? Your plan could be as simple as going to the gym, drinking water, and meditating more often – or as complicated as getting your master’s degree – it’s up to you. Break your plan down into small steps and take it one at a time.
Learn From Others
Those who are successful when it comes to personal development know just how important it is to learn from others. Just like the business owner who attends networking events to connect with influential people when building his or her brand, you can find people who have a strong ability to be highly influential in your life and gain from their success, whilst learning from their mistakes. Never be ashamed to ask for advice, regardless of what you need to know or learn – the right people will always be willing to spend some time letting you in on their ideas and experiences. You could even take it one step further and find a personal development mentor or coach. Or, simply read as many personal development books as you can – it’s a massive industry, with several titles available providing both direct tips and advice for personal improvement or the life stories of those who’ve managed to meet their personal development goals.
Embrace Change
It is human nature to be nervous about change sometimes, but it’s important to accept that the world is changing all the time. Even if you do nothing, you can’t stop the world moving and you’re going to change automatically as the world turns. There’s no escaping from it, and it’s not a bad thing – after all, if the world and the people in it never changed then we’d all still be cave-men. So, change is an important factor in your personal development plan. It’s important to identify anything that needs to be changed and figure out exactly how you are going to do this. What actions are you going to take to facilitate positive changes in your life?
Practice Gratitude and Recognize Your Worth
Bear in mind that it’s important to be kind to yourself when you’re working on your self-development plan. In order for you to truly grow as a person and continue doing so naturally for the rest of your life, the first step is to ensure that you recognise your worth. Failing to understand this will hold you back when it comes to development. That doesn’t mean that you should be overly proud and brag about your achievements all the time, but rather, be grateful for what you have been able to achieve so far and focus on what you already have. Think about how others are able to benefit from anything that you do and strive to continue allowing these benefits.
Be Accountable
Nobody else but yourself is responsible for your own progress. You and you alone are responsible for what and where you are today. This can be a tricky pill to swallow if you feel that the actions of others have held you back or led you to somewhere that you would rather not be, but the question now is how you are responsible for getting yourself out of that situation and into one that you prefer. Bear in mind that it is your job to initiate the steps that you’ve outlined in your personal development plan; nobody else is going to do it for you! And when it comes to results, they are yours to own.
Challenge Yourself
When it comes to personal development and growth, you should always try to remove words such as ‘can’t’ and ‘never’ from your vocabulary when it comes to yourself. On the other hand, it’s crucial to understand what you are capable of and set yourself goals that are just out of reach, rather than miles away. For example, if you were saving up to purchase your first home, it’s always easier to set yourself small monthly or weekly goals for the amount of money that you will put into your saving account, rather than simply working towards a huge amount all at once. As you begin to achieve smaller goals, you can increase them slightly until you get to where you want to be – and the same goes for your personal development. Always challenge yourself to push yourself further, when you feel yourself getting comfortable.
Follow Your Passion
Last but not least, pushing yourself to do something that you don’t like or enjoy will bring your personal development plan to a halt. Whilst it’s important that we are responsible enough to know when certain things need to be done even if we don’t enjoy them, when it comes to the bigger scheme of things, following a path that you are passionate about is always better than taking yourself down one that you aren’t enjoying at all.
What are you doing for your personal development? We’d love to hear your story.
