History

Celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, the club was nicknamed after Sir Harry "Hotspur" Percy, the nickname being a Shakespearean term for the local 14th century noble soldier.

Having played at White Hart Lane since 1899, Tottenham were the first non-league team to win the FA Cup (in 1901). A steady decline in the 1920s was eventually redressed by consecutive Second and First Division titles in the 1950s before a glorious start to the 1960s. Club legend Bill Nicholson, who had joined as an apprentice in 1936 managed the club as they became the first English side to win the League and FA Cup double in the 20th century, in the glorious 1960/61 season, before winning the Cup again in 1962 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963.

Alhough relegated in the 1976/77 season, Spurs replied with the historic signings of Ossie Ardilles and Ricky Villa in 1978. Intermittent cup successes in the 1980s followed, while disastrous managerial appointments clouded minor progress in the 1990s - for every Klinsmann, there was a Chris Armstrong and to undermine the emergence of Sol Campbell, there was the horror of Justin Edinburgh.

An improving team underachieved under Glenn Hoddle, before the bizarre 13-game reign of ex-France coach Jacques Santini, heralding the appointment of current manager and fan favourite Martin Jol.
