History
Manchester City started life as St Marks (West Gorton) in 1880. After moving to a new ground at Hyde Road in 1887, we renamed ourselves Ardwick AFC before settling on the name Manchester City FC in 1894.

The upheavals weren’t over just yet, however. In 1923, the club moved into the heart of Moss Side to play at Maine Road. That was home for 80 years until we struck a deal to lease the City of Manchester Stadium in 2003, following the end of the Commonwealth Games.

Sadly, most of our major achievements are similarly antiquated. The glory years began back in 1965, when legendary manager Joe Mercer took over the club in the second division. After working his magic, the club immediately won the second division and soon followed this up with the first division title in 1967.

However, those halycon days couldn’t last forever. Although we managed to relegate rivals Manchester United in 1974 (courtesy of a Denis Law backheel), the club swiftly went into decline when Mercer took over for a second spell in 1979. Financial mismanagement and extravagant transfer fees brought us to our knees in the 1980s and so far it’s been a torturously slow road back to the top.
