History
Blackburn Rovers football club was formed in 1875 following a meeting of Blackburn Grammar School old boys St.Leger hotel on King William Street. The club played its first game on 11 December 1875 against the Church Club.
Rover’s first ground was at Oozehead. They then moved to Pleasington Cricket Ground, then Alexandra Meadows and then to a rented ground in Leamington Road. Blackburn finally moved to Ewood Park in 1890, where they have been ever since.
The club quickly rose in prominence after their formation and in the 1881/82 season they reached the FA Cup final. They later won the trophy in 1884 and went on to claim it again in 1885, 1886, 1890 and 1891. Blackburn also won the Football League title in 1911/12 and 1913/14. These staggering pre-War heights were not to continue however and despite winning the FA Cup in 1928, the Rovers were relegated to the Second Division in 1935/36.
In the modern era Blackburn's recent success stories include the Premiership title in 1995, when the club possessed the formidable strike force of Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, and more recently the club won the League Cup (then the Worthington Cup) in the 2001/02 season.
