History

Aston Villa football club was founded in 1874 by Villa Cross Cricketers Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price and William Scattergood. The club moved to Villa Park in 1987.

Villa were one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888 and Premier League in 1992.

They are also one of England's most successful clubs, having secured five League Cup trophies, seven FA Cup wins and seven League titles.

The last League Cup success came in 1996's 3-0 victory over Leeds, while the club hasn't enjoyed FA Cup joy since the 1957 win against Manchester United.

Six of the club's League championship honours came in a golden era between 1893 and 1910. However, the Villa Park faithful had to wait until the 1980/81 season for the team to repeat the success.

The following season, Villa secured their greatest achievement to date - winning the European Cup 2-1 in Rotterdam against Bayern Munich.

Villa's hall of fame includes European Cup winners Dennis Mortimer, Gordon Cowans and Peter With, while Paul McGrath remains a firm favourite at Villa Park.

Recent years have been full of disappointment for the Villans, but if mega-rich US credit card tycoon Randy Lerner backs manager Martin O'Neill in the summer transfer market, the future could be bright.
