A manhunt in northern England has come to an end after 36-year-old James Allen was arrested by police in Leeds.

He had been wanted following the deaths of Colin Dunford, 81, and Julie Davison, 50, earlier in the week. Police had issued an urgent appeal to find him in the aftermath of what they believe to be murders.

Mr Allen has now been taken into custody on suspicion of killing the pair after he was spotted by an off-duty officer in the south of the West Yorkshire city.

The police official was travelling to work this morning (April 29th) when he identified a man fitting Mr Allen's description on Crown Point Road. He called for support and officers carried out the arrest.

Assistant chief constable Mark Milsom, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "We would like to thank all members of the community who have been contacting us to assist in this matter."

Mr Dunford was found in his home in Middlesbrough last Monday and Ms Davison was discovered at her address in Whitby on Wednesday. Both had suffered head injuries.
