American Brandt Snedeker equalled the two-day record score of 110 to take a one shot lead at The Open on day two. His second-round 64 helped him top the scoreboard on 10-under par, one shot ahead of Adam Scott.
The 31-year old has appeared in three previous Opens, but this is the first time he has even made the cut.
He said: "I am shooting away from every pin, trying to put it 25, 30 feet away and hopefully make some putts, which I have done the first two days and hopefully plan on doing the next few days."
Day one leader Scott added a 67 to his first-round score of 64 to stay in contention, while three-time champion Tiger Woods chipped in exquisitely at the last hole to stay four strokes off the lead.
Some high profile players became victims to the tough Royal Lytham and St Anne's course on day two, however, with Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey among them, both scoring a combined 11-over par for two days.
Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia are also headed home early, while England's Lee Westwood just made the cut by one stroke.
