Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has backed Brendan Rodgers to succeed as the new Liverpool boss.

The former Chelsea coach worked with Rodgers during his tenure at the west London club and he told The Sun he was delighted his work at Swansea City has been rewarded.

Liverpool have completed a wide-ranging search for a new manager after the sacking of club legend Kenny Dalglish.

Despite initially rejecting the chance to speak to the owners of the Merseyside team, Rodgers emerged as the standout candidate and will be announced as the new coach later today (June 1st).

Mourinho told the news publication it was the Northern Irishman's ability to communicate and share ideas that helps set him apart.

"I am very happy with his appointment, especially because he did it as a consequence of all his amazing work at Swansea," he added.

Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy was also effusive in his praise of the manager, stating the club had made a "very good appointment".
