Two police dogs have died after being left in a parked car outside the headquarters of the Nottingham police force.
The RSPCA were called to the police station on Tuesday and declared the two German shepherd dogs had died.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have been made aware of the incident and said to be contemplating whether to launch an investigation into the dogs' death.
Temperatures in Nottingham on Tuesday almost touched 30C as this week's heatwave continues to affect large parts of the country.
A statement posted on the Nottingham police website said the dogs were initially discovered outside the headquarters just after 14:00 BST.
The force said the welfare of its animals were of "paramount importance", adding: "We endeavour to take every measure possible to ensure their well-being and safety."
Assistant Chief Constable Peter Davies continued: "This is a tragic incident and we value the important work our police dogs carry out on a daily basis. That is why we swiftly reported this incident to the RSPCA and we will be working with them very closely."
