X Factor fans took to social networking sites last night to show their displeasure after the show's website revealed teenager Amelia Lily would be returning to the programme while live votes were still being counted.
The Sun reports that screenshots were posted of the story on Twitter, revealing it said: "As Dermot O'Leary read out her name, mentor Kelly Rowland jumped to her feet screaming as Amelia Lily looked stunned."
But when the article appeared on the site, the show was still ongoing with viewers urged to vote for their favourite act.
A space on the programme opened up after wild child Frankie Cocozza was booted out of the competition following allegations about drug use.
Gary Barlow described Amelia Lily's return as "sensational, incredible".
"The great British public loves a comeback," he added.
It was later revealed Amelia Lily had received almost half of the votes from viewers to return to the final stages of the X Factor, with 2 Shoes, James Michael and Jonjo Kerr missing out.
X Factor had suffered technical difficulties earlier in the night, with the start of the show delayed by 20 minutes as a result of a power glitch.
