British soldier dies in southern Afghanistan after explosion hits routine patrol
A British soldier has died in southern Afghanistan after an explosion during a routine patrol.

The unnamed soldier, from the First Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment, died at the scene following the suspected improvised explosive device attack in Sangin province.

"This is a tragic loss and one that will be felt across the Task Force," Lieutenant Colonel David Reynolds, spokesman for British forces in Afghanistan, said.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the friends and family at this most difficult time."

The soldier is the 117th to die in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of 2001.
