Rascal Flatts: Loving the UK

Tuesday, 05 Feb 2008 16:35
Rascal Flatts recently wowed the crowds at London's 100 Club.
Though they've had massive success in the US - with their last two albums certified four times platinum - country stars Rascal Flatts are probably best known in the UK for the Cascada trance cover of their smash hit What Hurts the Most.

The Ohio trio's seven year career has included six Country Music Association awards, more than 15 million album sales and nine number ones, yet a dodgy dance interpretation of one of their most moving tracks is their claim to fame on these shores

With an appearance at London's legendary 100 Club last week and the UK release of their first album, Rascal Flatts aim to change all that.

inthenews.co.uk's Lewis Bazley caught up with lead vocalist Gary LeVox to discuss the band's album, their plans for the future and their very diverse influences.

What's your proudest achievement so far?

Our proudest achievement so far is being able to come to the UK and finally be able to take our music worldwide. Also the People's Choice awards as we won Song of the year and best band. It was voted by the fans so it meant more.

What album changed your life and why?

Chicago – 17. We had never heard music crafted like that before and it made us want to make music. Stevie Wonder's music as it spiritually and emotionally moved us and we tried to emulate his sound. Also the Eagles' Hotel California.

Who is currently moving you musically at the moment?

John Mayer, Rihanna, Alisha Keys and Natasha Bedingfield

How would you describe your own/bands sound, or what do you hate being labelled as?

We hate being labelled as a boyband. We have worked hard to dispel misconceptions and we feel we have bought something new to the table and don’t think we can be put in a box.

What are the band's plans for the rest of the year?

We are going to keep on touring and our new tour starts in July. We are also going to cut a new album and come to the UK again.

Tell us about your worst live show yet...

The worst live show was at the Wild Horse Saloon in Nashville. The sound cut out and we had to start the set all over again.

How about three of your favourite songs from your career and the inspiration behind them?

It's Not Just Me as it was the first song we had wrote as a band. I Melt as again the three of us collaborated so made it special, and Broken Road.

What do you feel are your own limitations when it comes to creating/writing music?

We try not to have too many limitations and we try and surround ourselves with the best producers.

What goals did you set yourself before you started recording?

We set ourselves the goal to make the best music we possibly can. We just wanted to keep getting better at our craft.

How did the recording sessions for your new release go?

The recording session went great. We all took three months off to record it. We did nothing but focus on creating.
